Is Being Gay a Gift From God?

Being gay is a gift from God? “What verse is that?!”, I asked myself. As I watched this video the many Scriptures that display homosexuality as a sin (Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 1 Timothy 1:8-10 to name a few) rushed through my head. I thought to myself, “This guy had to have done some serious eisegetical gymnastics to come up with that idea!”

Here’s the video:

As you can see, Rev. Bacon made quite the “salad bar” out of the Bible by picking and choosing bits and pieces, tearing them out of context, and applying what fits his agenda. There are many misapplications of Scripture in this video, too many for me to deal with in this short post, but here are a couple of the most glaring examples:

Rev. Bacon paraphrased Genesis Chapter 1 and God’s proclamation that His creation, including man, is good. He applied this as argument that people, including gay and lesbians, are good. Well, for starters and for precision’s sake … God proclaimed that His creation was good at every stage of His work. It wasn’t until the sixth day when God created man, that He proclaimed the creation Very Good. But the main thing that should be noted here is that all of this was before the Fall of Man. After the fall … God had a completely different view of man as you can see here in Genesis 6:5:

The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Another striking misapplication was when he paraphrased John 3:17.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

He used this verse to explain that the Bible should be used in a non-condemning way. Again, he completely misapplied the meaning of this text You see, Jesus elswhere says that judgment does attend His coming into the world (John 9:39) His point here is not that He will not judge, but that the time is not ready. The world was already under threat of judgment before He came, but with His coming, salvation became a reality offered to a hostile world. When Christ was speaking here, it was His first coming. He is confronting people with the obligation to decide for or against Him. Until The Second Coming of Christ, this is still an age of redemption, a time to turn from sins and toward Jesus.

Rev. Bacon characterized himself as a “Biblically Oriented Person” in this video. So, to be on the airwaves saying that, “Being gay is a gift from God” it seems to me, in light of the reality of the warnings given in the Bible about homosexuality and many other sins, is a misleading message. Rev. Bacon might as well be saying that being an idolater, adulterer, a thief, a drunk, a reviler or swindler is a gift from God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 1 Timothy 1:8-10). He is giving people the false hope that their sin is not only acceptable, but a gift!

Please don’t read me wrong here!! Our lives ARE a gift from God! The very next breath you take in while reading this post is a gift from God! Homosexuality, adultery, theft and the long list of other sins, are not gifts from God. The Bible clearly characterizes them as sins against God (Psalm 51:4). The perpetrators of these, and all other sins, will be held accountable. (Hebrews 9:27, Romans 6:23, Matthew 12:36). The the loving message from a Biblically oriented person should be the Gospel! All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), but God sent His only son into the world so that all who believe may be rescued from their transgressions if they repent and trust in Him ( John 3:16-18, 2 Corinthians 5:21). Yes! our lives are a gift from God, but the REAL gift is the redemption and promise of eternal life available through Christ.
